President Joe Biden signed a proclamation on Aug. 8, 2023, establishing a new national monument in Arizona on land north and south of Grand Canyon National Park. Indigenous leaders and environmental activists had pushed for the monument and Arizona lawmakers — Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., and Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz. — had introduced bills in Congress to move ahead if Biden didn't. Critics of the new monument, including Mohave County leaders, mining interests and local ranchers, said it amounted to a land grab that would cost them economic opportunities.
